Moving In Together

If you decide to live with your partner then you need to think about if and how your finances are shared.

You need to decide how the rent, mortgage and other bills will be paid.  You should keep track of who is bringing what property into the relationship.

Often when people start living together they will have a few household items, furniture and a car each, but if you have more than that, say a house or savings, you might need to look at having an agreement drawn up about what will happen if you separate.

If you are currently receiving Centrelink benefits, you must tell Centrelink about moving in together.  If you don’t, you risk your benefits being cut off, being given a fine, or in some cases imprisonment.
